Many of us have had at one point or another a landlord that made our life miserable or a tenant that destroy the unit you own with so much hard work. Share those experiences with us, so that we can all learn from you and your experiences. Thank you in advance for the stories.

I have heard stories of both... from landlords who are just bad people and who don't care about the tenants they have in their properties to tenants who don't care about the property just because it's not theirs and they think they can do whatever they want to. I don't think neither position is right. Landlords should have the decency of taking care of the properties they own to a minimum standard without the tenants having to stop rent, or taking other actions... On the other hand, tenants should be taking care of the property they are renting because they are living there and I would think they want a place that looks nice, clean, semi-organized (I am not a very organized person), and think that this is someone else's and that you don't the right to destroy it... What do you think?

I had a nightmare landlord! We moved from NC to MO and the actual landlord was out of town. We met her at the house after 3 days on the road and signed the paperwork. I told her that the next rent payment would be based on when we got our first paycheck she said ok that was fine. Next she comes over one day when we were in the back yard, walked right into the house starts criticizing my decor etc. About a week later we get a letter demanding to know when we began receiving mail and they wanted copies of all of our past paystubs that year. It was a NIGHTMARE! We moved out a few months later.  Other than that we had 1 landloard that we were owner financing slip a note uder the door that he hadn't paid the mortgage and the house was being forclosed unless we came up with $50,000 in 3 days and last there was the apt that we lived in and when we went o pay the FIRST months rent the office had been abandoned.

Hi Crystal,

It does seemed you had interesting experiences... I hope those ended amicable if possible and you have also better experiences with other landlords. sometimes strange things do happen. :) You always have to keep your eyes open when doing owner financing... :) How's your current landlord?

HelloWorld... are you a landlord? I do believe most landlords do love their tenants and they like to keep them happy... from time to time, it's when you find some interesting ones taking advantage or not understanding the law very well... :) peace. :)

I live in SC and rent from an couple who have owned 3 apt complexes for over 30 years. & had a reputation of NOT tolerating parties or any nonsense & rented to a lot of elderly people. I had a neighbor (right next door) who lost his job & proceeded to play video games, movies, & music from 10 pm un 5 or 6 am all during the week at rock concert levels. I literally had everything on the wall we shared fall off (from the vibrations) several times even with long nails. That has never happened to me before. I worked from 7:30 am until 4 pm. I called the landlords several times between Sunday & Thursday (at 11 pm, 12:30, & 1:30 am). Each time they refused to do anything and then threatened to evict me for complaining. I told them that our city had a noise ordinance law so if they would not handle it, I would call the police.  I also told them that at least 5 other tenants (and their guests) had commented on the noise but they did not share a wall with this noisemaker. Several offered to talk with this guy, but I had already tried, very diplomatically, to no avail. I even offered the guy an expensive set of headphones in an attempt to find a solution. I called the police 3 times from 12 am until 4 am (there is a $1300 fine for citations). At this point, my landlords gave me written notice of eviction. I told them I had spoken with a lawyer and would file suit for a civil rights violation if they evicted me. By claiming in writing that I had complained about noise and that was the reason they were evicting me, they were denying my civil right to call the police on someone who was clearly breaking the law as well as jeopardizing my job (it's hard to do drafting work when you have been awake most of the night). I also told them I would subpoena at least 5 people (including 4 other tenants). I am still in my apartment, but our previously good relationship is very strained. I attended high school with one of their sons (same homeroom as our last name both start with a W). Needless to say I have lost all respect for these "Christian" and pillars of the community. Thank God, the noisemaker is gone-moved to another state to live with his sister since he could not find a job--- who could when they stay awake all night and sleep all day??? I do not call my landlords now unless I absolutely have to & only for major critical problems. I would move but the rent is the best & I've been out of work due to illness for the almost 2 years. However I am now looking for work and hope to get out asap.

I live in a small rental house out in the country in rural Missouri. The landlords are local farmers.

I have the money every month on time like I'm supposed to. At the end of every month when it's time to pay next month's rent. The landlord "hides" from me. She makes herself completely unavailable to be home to take the money. She never returns any of my phone calls. Then after pulling teeth to track her down, I mention that she wasn't home, she tries to say that she was and insinuates that I'm lying about it. There was raw sewage in my driveway for 9 months because the septic tank had collapsed inside. They had to drive right through this biohazard muck to get to their chicken house and did nothing about it. I just kept pressuring them about doing something about this raw sewage problem. I finally had to go to the woman's husband and tell him "This has to be fixed" and they did finally fix it. There are a host of other problems but too numerous to mention here

Donna,

I would be quite annoyed too with all that noise. The reaction of those landlords was not very typical. Most landlords would've started eviction on the tenant that was making the noise, not the one complaining. Leases are generally very clear on that. Association rules and compliance is a must. I am glad that he moved out and that you are doing better now with more sleep. Sorry to hear about your job. Hope everything is going good, though.

Thanks for sharing your story.

David,

I am glad they fixed that finally. We had a tenant who had problems with the septic tank, called us in, and within 24 h. it was taken care of. If not for your tenants, for your own home and your own appliances, etc., it should be taken care of... Things will deteriorate if they don't get taken care of... I've seen too many things go bad because of not regular maintenance. It's a plus in our organization. :)

Keep it up and eventually everything should be taken care of. :)

Thank you, David, for sharing your stories.

Patricia
